The San Pellegrino Piantamaggio
an ancient rite that celebrates the rebirth
Every year, the small community of San Pellegrino, a hamlet of Gualdo Tadino, meets to celebrate the Piantamaggio, an event that has its roots in ancient propitiatory rites related to spring and rebirth. It is a magical moment, in which tradition, collective strength and community spirit are intertwined.
I had the opportunity to witness and photograph the final part of this celebration in 2018, which takes place in the main square of the village.
The main protagonist is the poplar, now cleaned of its branches, which is debarked by hand by local men, a job that requires precision and dedication. Watching this moment, accompanied by the sound of the axe strokes on the wood and the warm participation of the spectators, was like taking a leap back in time.

The culmination of the event is the rise of May, a complex and extraordinary operation. Without the use of modern machinery, the trunk is hoisted in the center of the square, a feat that involves the whole community and which ends with applause, smiles and celebrations that continue until late at night.
Capturing this moment of intense collaboration and respect for traditions with a camera was a unique experience. It is this mixture of ritual and authenticity that makes the Plantation an event so special, a living bridge between past and present.
The expressions of the faces, the gestures sometimes violent at times almost tender towards this poplar tree really struck me.
