Via Crucis in Gubbio 2024
The intensity of the Via Crucis in Gubbio 2024: between fire, emotion, and photographic experimentation
The Procession of the Dead Christ in Gubbio is an event that encapsulates the power of tradition and the intensity of religious significance. This year, as every year for some time, I had the opportunity to document this unique celebration, but with a different approach that enriched not only my photographic work but also my personal experience. Together with my dear friend and partner Alessio Vissani, and under the expert guidance of Claudio Sannipoli, I had the chance to immerse myself in the evocative atmosphere of this celebration, exploring new techniques and experimenting with a less traditional artistic approach.
A unique context: the darkness of the night and the glow of the fire
Photographing the Via Crucis is never an ordinary task, but this year the visual landscape was even more extraordinary than usual. The night, illuminated by imposing bonfires along the route, created a play of contrasts that seemed almost surreal. The palpable warmth of the fire intertwined with the deep darkness of the night, giving rise to an atmosphere that spoke of drama and emotional intensity.
Walking beside those imposing flames was an immersive experience that engaged all the senses. The visual impact of the fire, combined with the solemn chants and the respectful silence of the participants, created an atmosphere that made this experience truly captivating.

A photographic exploration through motion blur and abstraction
To capture the emotional intensity of the procession, I decided to experiment photographically, adopting an extreme use of motion blur and very long exposure times. This approach allowed me to transform the images into something more than mere documentary representations. The resulting shots aimed to be visual interpretations of the drama and emotion that permeated the procession.
Motion blur, which has now become a distinctive element of my style for events like this and beyond, proved particularly effective in depicting the movement of the crowd and the vibrant energy of the fire. But this time, the long exposure times added a level of abstraction I had never explored before. I feel that the final images tell universal stories of life, death, and rebirth.
An experience that leaves its mark
Photography is not just a profession for me; it is a way to connect with the world and the people who inhabit it. Documenting the Via Crucis of Gubbio this year was much more than a simple photographic session. I experienced this evening as an emotional and artistic journey. The images I created are unlike anything I have ever produced. I am aware that their abstract and experimental nature might not appeal to everyone, but for me, they represent something new and deeply personal.

The emotions I experienced, the warmth of the fire on my skin, the darkness enveloping everything except the flickering light of the flames, and the intensity of the moment will stay with me for a long time. I hope that these sensations can shine through in my photographs, allowing those who view them to feel, even if just for a moment, the unique atmosphere of that night.
La Via Crucis di Gubbio
The Via Crucis of Gubbio is an event that every year offers new opportunities to tell stories through photography. This year, thanks to the unique context and my experimental approach, I had the chance to explore new artistic frontiers and grow as a photographer. I want to sincerely thank Alessio Vissani and Claudio Sannipoli for making this extraordinary experience possible. I can’t wait to share the images with you and to see if they convey the same intensity I felt during that magical night.
