TL70 Plus e Instax Square: Street Photography

TL70 Plus e Instax Square: Street Photography a Perugia

An autumn afternoon in the heart of Perugia, with my TL70 Plus and a 10-photo Instax Square Monochrome magazine, was the perfect opportunity to test a combination that promised emotions and a retro touch. Equipped with an external exposure meter for greater accuracy, I decided to ignore the machine’s integrated exposure meter to rely on my sensitivity and a more technical approach.

The TL70 Plus: a modern jewel with a retro heart

The TL70 Plus is an instant camera that combines classic design with modern functionality, offering a flexibility that’s rare in the instant camera landscape. Thanks to the adjustable aperture and a bright viewfinder, this machine is suitable for both creative experiments and more immediate shots.
The only drawback is the integrated exposure meter which, at least in my experience, is really unreliable.

One of the most intriguing aspects of the TL70 Plus is the ability to control all shooting parameters, which is impossible with the original Instax spots. This allows you to interact with light in a unique way, taking advantage of its versatility to adapt to different shooting conditions. The combination with black and white, then, adds an emotional dimension, transforming everyday scenes into small visual masterpieces.

The magic of Instax Square Monochrome film

Instax Square Monochrome film offers images rich in personality. This film is particularly suitable for street photography, where the details are essential to tell stories and black and white dominates undisturbed. During the walk, I focused on shadows, reflections and textures, taking advantage of the film’s sensitivity to capture fleeting moments with almost tactile intensity.

An experience to be repeated

The day ended with a feeling of great satisfaction. The TL70 Plus has proven to be a reliable companion, while the Instax Square Monochrome has confirmed its ability to add depth and character to images even though it is really difficult to use.
The choice to use an external light meter allowed me to obtain more controlled and consistent results, demonstrating once again how important it is to know and trust your equipment.

This experience reminded me of the essence of photography: capturing the soul of a place and a moment, letting the light and composition tell their story. Perugia, with its timeless charm, was the perfect setting for this creative exploration, and I look forward to coming back with new ideas and new films to test.
